The Role

Thanks to our innovative products and great team we are proud that the business is continuing to grow we now have an opportunity for a Physical Chemist to join our professional Laboratory team based in Rochdale.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and document methods of analysis for assessing regulatory compliance of food contact materials. This should take into account international FCM regulations and involve working closely with the regulatory and product stewardship teams to understand how regulatory changes impact our product portfolio
  • Prioritise, plan and schedule work to fit with departmental / customer priorities taking into consideration current business focus
  • Train junior staff and customers in the principles and practices of analytical testing and FCM compliance
  • Provide timely technical support and problem solving for customer enquiries to an agreed standard

Qualifications / Experience Critical For The Job Holder

  • Degree in Analytical Chemistry/ Physical Chemistry/ Materials Science or related discipline such as Polymer Science it is critical that the relevant candidate be able to understand likely chemical reactions and decomposition products based on raw material chemistry. A firm understanding of the Arrhenius equation and Ficks second law of diffusion and their application to migration modelling in complex multi-layer systems is also desirable
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably with chromatographic equipment such as GC or LC MS. Must be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of quality management systems including equipment calibration and quality control

Other Desirable Skills And Experience Include

  • Understanding of Food Contact Material regulation such as EU 10/2011, Swiss Ordinance, German Ink Ordinance and demonstrate an ethical awareness of how such work ensures the safety and health of consumers
  • Proficiency in using the AKTS SML software or similar commercial migration modelling software
  • Understanding of glass transition temperatures and their impact on migration of food contact materials
  • Knowledge of the octanol/water partition coefficient for assessment of polarity
  • Strong understanding of MS Office applications, in particular Microsoft Excel and use of advanced formulas
