Job Overview
Summary:
  • Organising and prioritising the work of the laboratory and ensuring tasks (e.g. colour matching, sample enquiries, product testing) are carried out on a timely basis and in line with customer expectations
  • Managing and developing the laboratory team, including ensuring they receive appropriate training
  • Playing a leading role in the maintenance of the highest quality standards and in maintaining the company's quality reporting system (discovery)
  • Work closely with the Operations Manager, the Production Manager, and with laboratory colleagues based in S-W's plants around the world
  • Testing and qualifying products to confirm or extend their useful lives
  • Providing advice to the sales/technical team and customers, by phone and, when necessary, by visiting the customer's premises to resolve issues and queries
Responsibilities:
  • Organises the work of the laboratory team and ensures appropriate prioritisation
  • Supports, advises and develops the laboratory team, including ensuring appropriate training
  • Where necessary reviews and amends production and mixing and blending processes and records changes in relevant systems
  • Assists in the requalification of out of date stock
  • Takes responsibility for the quality reporting system discovery and liases with operation, production and with intercompany units as necessary
  • Completes lab enquiries as necessary
  • As may be required, assisting production more complex colour-matching projects
  • Assists production by establishing, amending and, as necessary enforcing QC procedures
  • Responds to customer/sales/technical phone/e-mail enquiries
  • Assists in and where necessary organises customer technical training on-site or at Knottingley
  • Ensures that laboratory has the appropriate and necessary equipment
  • Performs audits and arranges maintenance on equipment as needed
  • Complies with all safety regulations and takes responsibility for ensuring safe operating procedures
  • Travels to support customers as and when required
Challenges:
  • Balancing a demanding laboratory workload with occasionally tight resources
  • Balancing support for customer field enquiries with the ongoing demands within the laboratory
  • Maintaining a clear focus on quality issues and ensuring that changes which are made are adhered to
  • Liaising with the intercompany laboratory personnel on quality and product matters and building a relationships which enables clear and effective communication
Requirements:
  • Formal qualifications in surface coatings, chemistry or equivalent
  • Previous experience in the coatings industry
  • Experience of best laboratory practices
  • Experience of managing and developing a laboratory team
  • Valid driving license
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively up, down and across the organisation
  • Excellent report-writing skills
  • There may be occasional need to travel overnight to customers, or to visit our intercompany laboratories in Italy or Sweden
Preferred:
  • HNC level or equivalent qualification
  • Knowledge of industrial wood coatings, and possible GI coatings
  • Colour and stain-matching experience
  • Experience of working with and reporting into quality systems
