We currently have an Industrial Placement opportunity available within the Innovation Incubator team to start in the summer of 2021.
This position will be based at AkzoNobel site in Felling, Gateshead and at the Catalyst building (National Innovation Centre for Data), in central Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The role will involve collecting, cleaning and modelling new data sources, developing data science concepts that may be applicable to future products. It is envisaged that a variety of modelling techniques and technologies will be employed by the successful applicant and the focus will be on both short term and longer-term modelling for the creation of new business models.
AkzoNobel has a strategic relationship with the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD) located at University of Newcastle upon Tyne. During this placement opportunity, the candidate with gain experience working alongside the NICD experts – solving problems and learning new skills and putting them into practise in practical projects.
The positions are predominantly office based, candidates must be highly enthusiastic about working as part of team to solve data science problems, and create value. Candidates must be willing to work in an agile manner to create value rapidly, working in an environment focussed on using Lean start-up methodology to create new data products. It is envisaged that the successful candidates will contribute with ideas to progress their projects and effectively organise their workload. A portion of time will also be spent writing up results, presenting progress and determining (along with the data science team) next steps in research. You will work under the guidance of a line manager and will be supported by a dynamic team of industrial data scientists and industry experts, as well as guidance from external experts in data science from the NICD.
To be considered for this industrial placement, you must be a high achiever and expecting to attain a minimum 2:1 degree or equivalent* on a course that offers you the option of taking a Year in Industry. Your degree subject area should be data science related, or alternatively have heavy elements of practical data science (e.g. mathematics and statistics).
A large part of the role will be use of R, Python, virtual machines and other data science tools. You should be familiar with these tools and concepts, but training will be given during the placement.
You must also have achieved a minimum of 3 Bs at A-level (or equivalent) as well as speak fluent English.
It goes without saying that you’ll be highly motivated and keen to contribute to the progress of engaging projects within our operation. You should have some previous experience of data science work with the ability to work accurately, tidily, methodically and safely, conducting yourself in a professional manner, adhering to AkzoNobel policies on health and safety, quality standards and confidentiality.
